Barwon Respect Cup

The Barwon Respect Cup is a community-based initiative that supports schools to promote healthy relationships, identify negative relationships, and promote bystander intervention.

The Barwon Respect Cup is a full day event combining respectful relationship workshops with a netball round robin.

The Barwon Respect Cup is run in partnership with Netball Victoria and the Sexual Assault & Family Violence Centre. The Barwon Respect Cup Committee is a collaboration of services from several organisations in the Barwon region that are taking a proactive approach to promoting respectful relationships.

The committee includes:

Aim

The Barwon Respect Cup aims to raise awareness of issues relating to gender-based violence and give young people the confidence to initiate activities that prevent and respond to gender-based violence within their school communities.

Event details

The Barwon Respect Cup event will be held in Term 4. It will bring together selected Year 9 students from schools across the Greater Geelong region for a morning of workshops exploring issues of consent, gender roles and equity at GMHBA stadium.

Students will have the opportunity to brainstorm different campaigns and initiatives they could run in their schools to raise awareness and promote respectful relationships. These workshops are followed by a mixed round-robin netball competition with a ‘respectful twist’.

Schools will be responsible for selecting 15 year 9 students to partake in the Barwon Respect Cup event, transporting their students to and from the venue, providing at least 2 teachers to attend and support the event and supporting students to initiate awareness raising action or event within their school communities.

NAPCAN Love Bites Program

This year we are also encouraging Respect Cup schools to a have their entire year 9 cohort participate in the NAPCAN Love Bites program.

This Respectful Relationships Education Program aims to provide young people with a safe environment to examine, discuss and explore respectful relationships.

We deliver this one-day program at no charge to schools.

This will be delivered throughout the year by our Youth Development Unit.
