The Geelong Young Leadership Program offers the opportunity for young people to develop leadership skills and be involved in their community and local Council.
Each year, 20 of the region’s most dynamic young people are given the opportunity to become a part of the Geelong Youth Leadership program. Each participant takes part in an intense 10 month program where they are given opportunities to explore and consider key challenges for people living in the City of Greater Geelong and surrounds.
All sessions are based on individual themes such as health, education, governance, regional development, social enterprise, cultural diversity, inclusive practice, event planning and partnerships. The sessions explore and develop further leadership skills needed to address issues in these topic areas.
After each session, these young leaders provide informed feedback to the Mayor and Council, from a young persons perspective, including any recommendations.
To become a part of the Geelong Youth Leadership program (GYLP), young people need to be 14–17 years old (as at 01/01/2019) and live, work or study with in the council area of the City of Greater Geelong.
Nominations are open from October 1, 2018 to November 15, 2018
A nomination form must be completed by your local school, education program, parent/guardian agency or club. We hope to include young people who may not be traditionally identified as leaders in education or sporting environments.
The 2019 program commences with 2 days back to back on the 22nd and 23rd of January (school holidays) after which the seminars will commence on Friday 9th February and every month there after for 10 months. Participants must attend both January sessions and a minimum of 80% of seminars to be eligible to graduate.
Successful nominations will be based on getting a diverse range of young people across the municipality.
Successful nominees will be invited to an interview no later than 1st December 2018.
