Position description for the Meals on Wheels voluntary role.

The Food Service provided by Connected Communities is designed to provide nutritionally balanced meals to the frail, aged and people with disabilities that will assist in maintaining them in their own homes in order to prevent inappropriate admission to residential care.

The Food Services Volunteer provides an important part in the provision of this service by:

  • Delivering a nutritionally balanced meal to the recipients of this service.
  • Providing social contact for people who may be socially and emotionally isolated.
  • Providing feedback for the purpose of monitoring our clients in their homes.

Position responsibilities

Key responsibilities:

  1. Deliver meals to clients in  timely and safe manner.
  2. Be the City’s “eyes and ears” and if a problem arises, or you notice any changes in a recipient’s wellbeing, report this to your supervisor
  3. Check the delivery sheets with Food Services staff where applicable.
  4. Distribute and collect client menu sheets.
  5. Adhere to Food Services Volunteer Procedures,  Code of Conduct and to all Council’s policies and procedures relevant to this position.

The following general physical and functional requirements may apply to this position. Specific physical requirements will be attached if applicable.

  • Manual handling tasks.
  • Prolonged periods of inactivity eg. sitting.
  • Long / short distance travel between sites.
  • Getting in and out of a vehicle.
  • Dealing with difficult clients and situations.
  • Demanding deadlines.

Key selection criteria

  1. Good communication and customer liaison skills.
  2. An outgoing friendly personality, a caring attitude and the ability to relate to people from all walks of life.
  3. Good written and oral communication skills.
  4. Ability to work as part of a team.
  5. Ability to and understanding of the need to respect and maintain client privacy and confidentiality.
  6. Ability to safely carry out all the duties and responsibilities of the role.
  7. Satisfactory National Police Records Check (issued within the last 6 months).
  8. Previous experience in working with the frail, aged or people with disabilities (an advantage).
  9. The ability to make on the spot decisions using personal judgement in an emergency situation (an advantage).


  • A volunteer may be rostered to deliver on a daily, weekly, fortnightly or monthly basis and can choose to be available for emergencies (such as when the rostered volunteer is unavailable).
  • Meals are delivered from Monday to Friday.The average daily run takes approximately 1½ to 2 hours to complete.

Additional information

  • You will need to supply the details of two referees - 1 personal referee and 1 professional referee if you have been employed within the last 5 years. Please supply names and contact details on your application form.
  • The City of Greater Geelong provides personal injury cover under our Personal Injury Insurance and therefore volunteers can work up to 90 years of age.
  • Animals and/or children cannot accompany volunteers.
  • It is vital that volunteers do not discuss their own or a client’s personal issues or home situations with anyone. Any issues regarding your own or a client’s health or wellbeing should reported to your Coordinator.
  • A current Victorian Driver’s Licence is essential where you are required to drive a Council vehicle or your own vehicle.
  • You may be required to drive your own vehicle, and if so, third party insurance is required (fully comprehensive vehicle insurance is recommended).
