Infectious Disease Control

Controlling disease and illness is important in every community.

Our Environmental Health Officers (EHOs) have a role in controlling infectious disease within the City of Greater Geelong.

In businesses

Health related personal treatment businesses are supported by our officers.

This includes advising, approving and regularly monitoring businesses such as:

  • hairdressing
  • nail salons
  • body piercing
  • tattooing
  • waxing
  • threading
  • manicuring
  • intense pulsed light (IPL)
  • spray tanning
  • eyelash extensions
  • colonic irrigation

In the community

The EHOs are sometimes required to interview clients on behalf the Department of Health and Human Services when there is a gastro outbreak or a disease notification.

We may also be involved when a notifiable disease is of concern in the community.

Aquatic facilities registration - some aquatic facilities are required to be registered with us, under the Public Health and Wellbeing Act.

Immunisation is one way to control some infectious diseases and our immunisation service is managed through Barwon Health.

Our mosquito management program also forms part of infectious disease control. Our council is one of only a few councils in Victoria that performs treatments of mosquito larvae.
