As part of the City’s Summer in our Laneways initiative, we’ve set
up a designated 24/7 Pick Up and Drop Off zone for ridesharing services on
Malop Street at the Dennys Place Breakthrough.
The four short-term parking spots in front of Frankie Bar &
Eatery provide an easily accessible pick up and drop off point for the Little
Malop Laneways Precinct (also known as Little Malop West End).
The Denny’s Place Breakthrough provides quick, safe and convenient
pedestrian access between the short-term parking bays and Little Malop Laneways
Precinct.
Although the short-term parking is for use by the whole community,
everyone seeking to use an Uber within this precinct will be directed to this
specific location.
The Safe City Taxi
Rank, which is located on the eastern side
of Moorabool Street between Malop Street and Little Malop Street, is another
option for a safe ride home. Security will be based at this rank on New Year’s
Eve, in addition to monitoring every Sunday morning from 12:00am-6:00am.
We are expecting a lot of people visiting the Little Malop
Laneways Precinct on New Year’s Eve. To create the best experience for everyone
and ensure public safety, access to Little Malop Street from Gheringhap Street
will be closed to vehicles from approximately 9:30pm on Tuesday 31 December,
reopening at 4:00am on Wednesday 1 January 2025. Emergency vehicles, local
residents, and musicians unloading their cars will have access.
The City continues to work with Victoria Police to ensure safety
in this precinct.
Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM
The initiative is part of
efforts to help the distinctive Little Malop West End reach its full potential.
Given this special precinct is so popular, we’ve introduced this
new 24/7 Pick Up and Drop Off zone to make it even easier to visit.
The designated spot will improve safety and convenience for the
community, while helping the flow of traffic on Malop Street.
It’s time to embrace summer in our laneways and we thank
community members for not driving after drinking.
Acting Inspector Nick Uebergang, Geelong Local Area Command
Victoria Police are happy to work with the City of Greater Geelong which will
allow all emergency services to have greater access to Little Malop Street and
other areas of the city to ensure community safety.
Our trial to expand the outdoor dining area on Little Malop Street
is underway, with the aim of supporting local businesses, creating a more
vibrant culture, attracting more visitors and improving the street’s character.
All visitors to the
precinct are invited to provide their feedback on the trial via our online survey.
