A Minerva
Road and Church Street, Herne Hill pedestrian safety upgrade has been completed
as part of the Federal 2023-2024 Black Spot Program.
The Minerva
Road and Church Street pedestrian sites were one of the priority areas selected
for improvement in the 2023-2024 program and was fully funded by the Australian
Government at a cost of around $618,000.
The City
invited the local community to provide feedback on how to make this area safer
for all road users including vehicles, buses, pedestrians and cyclists to
inform the final design.
The safety
upgrades include raised pedestrian crossings, footpath widening, street
lighting upgrades, raised intersection, reflective pavement markers, line
marking upgrades, additional parking bays and green bike treatments. Traffic
signal sequence changes are expected to be completed within the next three
months.
There is
also a permanent speed reduction to 40 km/h on Minerva Road between Church and
Douglas streets.
The purpose
of Black Spot projects is to reduce serious injuries and fatalities at sites
where there has been a history of accidents by implementing treatments such as
traffic signals, pedestrian crossings and speed reductions.
Federal
Member for Corio Richard Marles
The Albanese Labor Government remains
committed to improving road safety in Australia.
The Black
Spot Program funding is a great outcome for Geelong and will continue to
improve safety in our community.
Councillor
Eddy Kontelj
This is a
busy area with many schools, shops and community facilities in the one location
so it’s really important that it’s as safe as possible for pedestrians and road
users.
Thank you
to the Herne Hill and Manifold Heights community for showing understanding and
patience throughout the construction phase.
