The South Geelong to Waurn Ponds Duplication project will deliver more frequent and reliable services and better stations for passengers on Victoria’s busiest regional rail line.
The Surf Coast Highway closure at the rail level crossing will take place from 22 September to 26 September 2023.
The project is part of the Australian and Victorian governments’ more than $1 billion investment in the staged upgrade of the Geelong Line.
The completed Waurn Ponds Station upgrade and stabling and maintenance facility in Waurn Ponds are also part of this major investment in the Geelong Line.
The project will deliver the critical upgrades between South Geelong and Waurn Ponds to enable five train services per hour during peak hours, and three per hour off peak for Marshall and Waurn Ponds stations.
The project includes:
- removal of the level crossings at Fyans Street and Surf Coast Highway and construction of elevated rail bridges
- upgrading South Geelong and Marshall stations with improved facilities and accessibility - this will include new station buildings, forecourts and second platforms, more shelter and better wayfinding
- duplicating around eight kilometres of track in sections from South Geelong Station to Breakwater Road, and from Marshalltown Road to Waurn Ponds Station.
- more than five kilometres of new walking and cycling paths linking to existing trails and paths - this will create a continuous connection between South Geelong and Waurn Ponds
- signalling upgrades between South Geelong and Waurn Ponds
- new green open spaces and urban design improvements
- a business case to determine the infrastructure required to deliver more services - this will explore upgrades to the rail tunnel between Geelong and South Geelong and the rail line over the Barwon River.
