Residents recycle unwanted chemicals

In all, 297 residents took advantage of the free chemical drop off event on Saturday 18 September at the Corio Operations Centre.

The highest volume products collected were flammable liquids, toxics and inert liquids.

Paint was not accepted at the event as this can be dropped off at no cost at the Drysdale and Geelong Resource Recovery Centres.

Once sorted, the chemical containers are placed in sealed drums for transportation and taken to a specialist waste treatment facility for final treatment and recycling.

Newspaper advertising, social media posts and information leaflets were the most common ways in which residents became aware of the event.

Around 65 per cent of participants were first time users of the service and all agreed that they would use it again.

The event was conducted in conjunction with Sustainability Victoria and is part of the City’s recycling and circular economy program.
