Recycling plastic number codes

Plastic number codes can help in deciding what goes in the recycling bin.

Plastics manufacturers stamp a Plastics Identification Code (codes one to seven) on their products.

This is to identify the type of plastic that the product is made from.

Plastics you can put in your recycle bin

Only rigid or hard plastic containers labeled 1,2,3,4 and 5 can be placed in the recycling bin.

Plastics you can't put in your recycle bin

Soft plastics items such as:

  • empty bread bags
  • biscuit packets
  • frozen food bags
  • rice and pasta bags
  • confectionary packets
  • plastic shopping bags and
  • old reusable bags

But they can still be recycled - via specially marked bins at selected Coles and Woolworths supermarkets.
