Rainbow Ready Roadmap

The City of Greater Geelong has been working on LGBTQIA+ inclusion for many years, with the Youth Development Unit’s Gender and Sexuality Program (GASP) that began in 1996. In recent years, the City has progressed this work beyond the youth space, with significant achievements including:

  • Establishment of the LGBTQIA+ Advisory Committee in February 2023.
  • Completion of the Rainbow Crossing in December 2023.
  • Leadership of Geelong’s annual high-profile partnership event for IDAHOBIT since 2019.
  • Regular youth events including for Wear it Purple.
  • Flying the rainbow flag and/or transgender flag on days of significance.
  • Attracting to Geelong and sponsoring the National LGBTQIA+ conference ‘Better Together’, at GMHBA Stadium in June 2024.
  • Ongoing inclusive practice improvements across Family Services.
  • LGBTQIA+ inclusive workplace practices, including e-learning modules for staff, events promoting days of significance, email signatures and establishment of the Employee Pride Network.

To continue to progress LGBTQIA+ inclusion, the City is using the Victorian Government's Rainbow Ready Roadmap to assess gaps and guide future priorities. The Rainbow Ready Roadmap is a set of resources designed to help regional and rural communities to progress work on LGBTQIA+ inclusion. Launched in May 2022, this roadmap supports Pride in our Future: Victoria’s LGBTQIA+ strategy 2022-32. It provides 15 indicators for local government.

Our progress against the Rainbow Ready Roadmap indicators is summarised in the following report, available below.
