The City of Greater Geelong's
National Wool Museum has been declared Australia's best regional museum, winning a 2024 Wotif Uniquely Aussie Award.
In announcing the Wool Museum as the winner of the Best Regional Museum category in the awards - which are decided via public nomination - wotif.com said: "Geelong has been known as the ‘wool centre of the world’ for many years, and at the National Wool Museum you can find out why. Set in a beautifully restored 19th-century wool store, the museum showcases the history of the Aussie wool industry, as well as an exciting and diverse program of temporary exhibitions. Before you leave, be sure to check out the museum shop, where you’ll find fantastic wool garments and gifts — perfect for a souvenir (or three)."
The National Wool Museum is managed by the City of Greater Geelong with support of dedicated volunteers on
behalf of the Australian public.
The Wool Museum was chosen as the national
winner over finalists from every other state and territory.
The museum is open for the public to visit seven days a week between 10am and 5pm.
Mayor Trent Sullivan:
We’re so proud of the National Wool Museum and
rapt to see it receive this recognition. It’s particularly special given these
awards are voted by the general community.
The success of the museum is testament to the passion and dedication of our
amazing staff and volunteers. They work so hard to make it a vibrant place and
give visitors an outstanding experience every time.
National Wool Museum Director
Padraic Fisher:
It’s both humbling and exciting for the museum to receive this
award.
This is vibrant time for regional Australia and the competition was fierce. We
are delighted that the cultural heart of regional Australia is being showcased
in this way.
As the Museum of and for Geelong, the ‘Bluestone Jewel Box’ is a place for
everyone. A place for the curious to explore the world around us and this place
we now call Geelong.
The Museum sits on an ancient place of gathering for thousands of generations.
It links the waterfront and Central Geelong and is a place to explore things
that can only be found in Geelong, share our collective experiences and also
happens to have the best gift shop in Geelong!
