For the safety of both visitors and
staff, the City of Greater Geelong is extending the current arrangement at the
Geelong Resource Recovery Centre, which temporarily stopped accepting garden
organics, soil and rubble in 2024.
The Geelong Resource Recovery Centre
has faced ongoing challenges with traffic and capacity due to its small size
and the large variety of materials being accepted for disposal.
During the stay on garden waste, soil
and rubble during the site upgrades, there was a large improvement in the
movement and safety around the site.
This extension will also allow the
Geelong Resource Recovery Centre to prioritise difficult-to-recycle materials,
which aren’t accepted at other nearby facilities. This will support the City’s
ongoing efforts to reach its landfill diversion goals.
The change will remain in place until
permanent safety upgrades are completed at the facility.
Residents can still dispose of garden
organics, soil, and rubble at other drop-off locations within a 15 km radius of
the Geelong Resource Recovery Centre such as Transformer Metals in North
Geelong, Green Care Mulching in Moolap and Fyansford Waste Disposal.

There has been a noticeable improvement in safety at the Geelong
Resource Recovery Centre during this time.
With the site’s limited capacity and
the large volume of materials being processed, this temporary diversion has
made a real difference. It allows for safer traffic flow and helps us better
manage the site’s resources, all while continuing to meet community needs.
Council Environment & Circular
portfolio chair Elise Wilkinson
The community has adapted well to the
changes at the Geelong Resource Recovery Centre especially with other drop-off
sites nearby.
We’re committed to making Geelong’s
waste management systems safer, more efficient and better equipped to serve our
community.
A master plan for Geelong Resource Recovery Centre
is currently being developed, and community members will have an opportunity to
provide feedback. To stay updated, join the City’s online engagement platform
