Community members may have spotted a new and thought-provoking
public artwork at the entrance
to Rippleside Park.
The City is excited to deliver
‘Momenta,’ developed by artists and designers Geoff Trensky and Tony Gilevski,
and funded through the Geelong City Deal.
The abstract fish sculpture
marks the start of the scenic drive into central Geelong, a key arrival point,
and acknowledges the unique features of the site.
The sculpture is part of
the Arrivals Indicators project, which aims to ease navigation and reinforce
key destinations that link the entrance to our region with central Geelong.
Inspired by the rhythmic ebb and flow of
Corio Bay, 'Momenta' is steel fabricated and finished
with an industrial paint system that incorporates five coatings, using large
geometric plates to both contrast with and reflect the natural landscape.
The work reflects the social
and cultural histories and importance associated with fish at Rippleside. At
3.2 metres by 3.5 metres, it is positioned where creeks meet the sea, close to
fish breeding grounds.
Geoff
Trensky develops meaningful and timeless place-based narratives, told in a
creative and relatable way.
Tony
Gilevski's work involves assembling expressive geometric shapes to form both
representational and abstract compositions.
The Arrival Indicators project is part of the Geelong City
Deal, a collaborative partnership to transform Geelong and the Great Ocean Road
by the Australian and Victorian Governments, and the City of Greater Geelong
through the Revitalising Central Geelong Action Plan.
Mayor Stretch Kontelj
Council is
thrilled to see the installation of Momenta.
I want Geelong
to be renowned for its public art and I’ll be doing whatever I can to promote
art in all of its forms during my term as mayor.
I’m absolutely
passionate about pushing for more public art across our city and in all our new
developments.
A clever and
creative city needs art and culture to inspire and stimulate people, and more
public art will help make Geelong a great place to live, work, play and visit.
Victorian Minister for Regional Development Gayle Tierney
Thanks to
the Geelong City Deal, public art brings life to every part of Geelong,
inviting both residents and visitors to experience the essence of our
remarkable city.
Public artwork
helps serve as significant landmarks and can contribute to city vibrancy for
locals and visitors alike.
