Season extended for North Bellarine Aquatic Centre

Wednesday, 27 March 2024

Council has resolved to extend the season at North Bellarine Aquatic Centre for the next two months following an Urgent Business item at last night’s meeting.

The $15.5 million heated facility was budgeted to close between April and October 2024, due to financial sustainability.

Following the Easter Monday public holiday, the 50-metre outdoor pool will open from Tuesday 2 April to Friday 31 May on weekdays between 6:00am - 10:00am and 3:00pm - 6:00pm, and on Saturdays from 8:00am - 12:00pm.

The extended operating hours will require a reallocation of $96,000 from the 2023/2024 operating budget to cover staff wages and fixed costs such as utilities.

A report will be brought back to Council in May to identify opportunities to enable the facility to remain open ongoing.

Mayor Trent Sullivan

The community was thrilled when stage one of the North Bellarine Aquatic Centre opened in November.

The Bellarine community has been putting the eight lane facility to good use since its opening last year.

After listening carefully to residents’ feedback about the upcoming closure, we have found additional funding to ensure the pool stays open over April and May.

We’re pleased that the North Bellarine Aquatic Centre will continue to be used by squad and recreational swimmers, and residents who just enjoy the warm water and socialising.

Please take advantage of the centre during the next two months and consider becoming a member at geelongaustralia.com.au/nbac.

The support you provide now by investing in a membership will help ensure the facility is financially viable into the future.

Councillor Elise Wilkinson

Council recognised the many health benefits to swimming.

Swimming is an all-round winner, as it builds strength, increases mobility, assists rehabilitation and contributes to a healthy mindset.

The North Bellarine Aquatic Centre was designed to foster health, wellness, and inclusivity for all.

Council is excited that the much anticipated facility would remain open for the community over April and May and promote a range of health gains.
