Investing in community gardens: Empowering communities and nurturing growth

Monday, 19 February 2024

Community gardens serve as vibrant hubs that foster a sense of belonging, promote sustainable practices, and contribute to overall well-being. The City understands the invaluable role these gardens play in enriching neighbourhoods and strengthening community bonds. That's why we're thrilled to announce our support for community gardens through our 2023-24 Community Infrastructure Grants program.

Community gardens offer a plethora of benefits to individuals and neighbourhoods alike. They serve as gathering places where people from diverse backgrounds come together to cultivate friendships, learn new skills, and share knowledge. Additionally, these green spaces provide opportunities for individuals to grow their own nutritious produce, promoting healthier lifestyles and food security within communities.

We are delighted to allocate funds to three deserving community garden projects:

  • Grovedale Community Garden Inc: This initiative will receive $53,600 to revitalise their infrastructure, including replacing an old shed and incorporating tool storage. The addition of an undercover indoor space will facilitate community workshops, events, and food swaps, further enhancing engagement and participation.
  • Chilwell Community Garden Inc: With a grant of $69,300, Chilwell Community Garden Inc will be able to enhance their facilities with essential upgrades such as water connection, fence construction, and the installation of a shed with a roof and verandah. These improvements will create a more functional and inviting space for gardeners and visitors alike.
  • Murnong Community Garden Inc: Recognising the importance of ongoing development, Murnong Community Garden Inc will receive $94,000 to invest in new infrastructure. This funding will enable the garden to expand its offerings and better serve the needs of the community.

As we celebrate the recipients of our Community Infrastructure Grants, we encourage everyone to explore the transformative power of community gardens. Whether you're interested in gardening, sustainable living, or simply connecting with your neighbours, there's something for everyone in these thriving green spaces.

By investing in community gardens, we not only cultivate thriving green spaces but also nurture the social fabric that binds us together. Learn more about about community gardens including how to get involved.
