Big summer of sailing continues to propel Geelong onto the global stage

Monday, 5 February 2024

Following the resounding success of the Festival of Sails, the Royal Geelong Yacht Club is set to host two more prestigious sailing events that will once again put Geelong in the international spotlight.

The National Fireball Championships will take place 5 to 8 February, swiftly followed by the World Fireball Championships, 9 to 17 February 2024.

With 130 Fireball Class Yachts and 260 competitors converging on Corio Bay, the city is set to become a hub of sailing excellence. In support of this significant event on the Geelong Waterfront, the City of Geelong is opening up a portion of public land on Eastern Beach for additional boat storage.

Mayor Trent Sullivan

The City is honoured to throw its full support behind the National Fireball Championships and the World Fireball Championships.

In order to facilitate the championships, a designated section of Eastern Beach will be conditionally allocated from 5 to 19 February 2024.

The influx of participants, spectators, and enthusiasts is anticipated to breathe new life into the local economy during this vibrant period.

Geelong's picturesque waterfront and world-class facilities will play host to a dynamic and competitive showcase of sailing prowess.

However, in the spirit of this maritime celebration, it comes with a minor trade-off – there will be no beach volleyball activities at Eastern Beach during the championship period.

Mayor Trent Sullivan

I assure the community that this temporary measure is essential to ensure smooth operations and the safety of all involved.

We appreciate the understanding of the community.

Geelong is ready to set sail into the limelight once again, showcasing its passion for sailing, community spirit, and unmatched hospitality on the global stage.

On 20 February, the designated section of Eastern Beach will be reopened.
