'Christmas in our community' grants foster inclusivity and equity

Geelong's northern suburbs are gearing up for the festive season as communities unite to celebrate the magic of Christmas with a family movie night and an open-air celebration in Corio funded by the City’s annual Christmas in the Community grants.

This Friday evening, families are invited to a fun Christmas movie night at Rosewall Community Centre, 36 Sharland Road, Corio, at 6 pm (movie starts at 6:45 pm). Pack a picnic and wear your best Oodie. There will be popcorn, fairy floss, and a big-screen movie. You can also get a selfie with Santa - all free! Free tickets to the end-of-year movie night are going fast!

Be sure to get yours quick - Book online.

Also on Friday 22 December, there will be a Festive Community Celebration at Cloverdale Community Centre, 167-169 Purnell Rd, Corio (4:30 pm – 8:30 pm). Come along to this open-air celebration featuring live music, creative arts, food, family activities, and market stalls at Cloverdale Community Centre 4:30 pm – 8:30 pm. This event promises free food and entertainment, along with local artisan market stalls offering affordable gifts.

Mayor Trent Sullivan:

Recognising the need for greater equity and inclusion during the holidays, the City of Greater Geelong is proud to provide a total pool of $36,000, offering individual grants of up to $4,000 per application, which are exclusively extended to the 14 Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) recognised Neighbourhood Houses that operate in the City of Greater Geelong.

We believe in empowering communities to create their own festive traditions, and these initiatives align with our commitment to ensuring that no one is left behind during the holiday season.

Deputy Mayor Anthony Aitken:

Through the Christmas in the Community Grants, we aim to create opportunities for everyone to enjoy the festivities and foster a sense of belonging.

The City of Greater Geelong extends its gratitude to the Neighbourhood Houses for their invaluable work in building resilient and connected communities.

Geelong Giving Tree Appeal

This year, we are again proudly supporting the Geelong Giving Tree Appeal.

For those who can, we encourage you to support those in need in our community.

The rising cost of living has impacted many people and families in our community who are facing challenging times, finding stable accommodation, employment and paying bills. For many, that means surviving week to week on limited funds.

By donating what you can to the appeal, you’ll be sharing the joy of Christmas.

Meli, in partnership with The Sexual Assault and Family Violence Centre, are running the 22nd Geelong Giving Tree Appeal to support the many local families and individuals who need a helping hand.

Donations can be made between 11 November and 9 December 2023 - visit the Geelong Giving Tree Appeal website.

Last year, the Geelong Giving Tree Appeal converted the funds raised by the appeal into e-gift cards and helped support over 3,200 families and individuals across Greater Geelong to enjoy Christmas Day.
