Waste wise living: it's easier than you think

Reducing your waste is more important than ever. All it takes is a few simple changes to your routine.

Amy, from Geelong West, made some basic changes that have massively reduced her household waste. She now only puts her red-lid rubbish bin out for collection every six weeks – and even then, it’s never full.

We asked her to share her top 3 tips.

  1. Home composting
  2. It’s way easier than you think. I bought a compost tumbler, which is so simple to use. I was amazed to learn how much of my waste was organic once I started composting.

  3. Smart recycling
  4. I sort my recycling into separate bins (paper, glass, cans and hard plastics with codes 1, 2, 4 and 5) and drop those off at the Geelong Resource Recovery Centre. I keep my soft plastics separate and drop them off at the supermarket for recycling.

  5. Buy package-free when you can
  6. I’m conscious about what I buy and try to avoid packaging wherever I can by taking all my own bags and shopping locally at farmers’ markets and wholefoods stores.
