Dogs on beaches during summer

Friday, 13 December 2019

The weather is warming up and our beaches are getting busier. To make sure everyone can safely enjoy the coast, we have some dog restrictions over summer. During peak holiday season (18 December until 31 January), dogs are not permitted on most of the main beaches of Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads, including the west and east bank of the Barwon River, The Bluff and Ocean Grove Main Beach. Barwon Coast manages this land, spanning from Connewarre to Collendina.

Until then, dogs are permitted off-leash and under effective control from Thirteenth Beach to 35W, and from 34W to 30W. However please follow the local signs which are in place to protect the critically endangered Hooded Plover birds. Dogs are also permitted off-leash and under effective control from 13W to 7W west all year-round.

Bellarine Bayside has dog restrictions for sections of Portarlington Beach, Indented Head Beach and St Leonards Beach during the summer season, which includes the trails running through the foreshore caravan parks.

Visit our dog walking maps page for more information.
