A draft master plan for West Oval has been released for public consultation.
It proposes a significant redevelopment of the site, including:
Construction of a new, two-storey multi-use club and community building
- New entrance from Weddell Rd including a pedestrian plaza
- Enhanced seating for spectators
- Conversion of existing toilet block into a fit-for-purpose storage facility
- Supporting infrastructure such as coaches’ boxes and interchange areas to meet AFL standards.
The heritage listed Flowers Family Stand would be retained and protected, with internal improvements.
Located on the corner of Church Street and Weddell Road in North Geelong, West Oval is home to the Geelong West Giants Football Netball Club, Geelong West Cricket Club and Geelong Cycling Club.
It was identified in the G21 Barwon AFL Strategy 2015 as the preferred host venue for regional football finals and events, including the TAC Cup and AFL Barwon finals and AFLW matches.
Council has allocated $100,000 in its 2018-19 budget for detailed design and cost testing, but is yet to commit further funds.
Funding of the redevelopment would require a partnership between state and federal governments, the AFL, local sporting clubs and the City of Greater Geelong.
The plan will be available for public review and comment for the next four weeks.
Acting Mayor Peter Murrihy:
West Oval is a highly valued open space with over 1050 club users.
This proposed master plan would significantly improve the facilities for the tenant clubs and for the many more within the local community who use the venue for informal recreation and leisure.
Cr Anthony Aitken, Co-Chair, Social and Infrastructure Planning portfolio:
This plan would bring the venue’s change facilities up to standard for women’s sport, which is important given the growing female participation rates at the tenant clubs and across the region.
It also attempts to align with the strategic direction of AFL Barwon by providing facilities that position West Oval as the future finals host for the Geelong Football League, the most successful football league in Victoria outside of the AFL.
We’ll now await the community’s feedback.
