Johnstone Park maintenance works

Sunday, 29 October 2017

Johnstone Park will be temporarily closed to the public for approximately three weeks while irrigation works are carried out in the south-west section of the park, in front of the Geelong Regional Library and Heritage Centre.

Following the completion of the works the south-west corner, between Little Malop St and Fenwick St, will reopen for public use.

The north-west section of the park, between Fenwick St and Railway Tce, will be closed until approximately mid-January 2018.

Access to the paved area next to the Geelong Regional Library and Heritage Centre, and to the Geelong Peace Memorial will be maintained for the duration of the works.

The City is working closely with the Y Service Club of Geelong to facilitate a new venue for the 2017 Carols by Candlelight event, held annually in Johnstone Park on Christmas Eve.

The new carols location will be announced in the coming weeks.

The maintenance works, which include upgrades to the surface material on pathways and improved lighting, power and water, will complement an all-abilities-access tiered raingarden currently under construction in the north-east section of the park through the Revitalising Central Geelong Partnership.

The Johnstone Park Raingarden is expected to be finished and accessible to the public in December.

City of Greater Geelong's Director Investment and Attraction Brett Luxford says:

“The aim of the Johnstone Park improvements is to provide an inviting, well-maintained and accessible green space in the heart of Central Geelong, capable of hosting a wide range of events during the day and night.

“The works will temporarily limit access to the park and we apologise for any inconvenience this may cause."
