Draft Highton Village Urban Design Framework – open for consultation

Thursday, 7 September 2017

We issued this media statement about the start of community engagement for the Draft Highton Village Urban Design Framework.

Geoff Lawler - Acting Director Planning and Development

We have developed an exciting proposal for a new public plaza in Belle Vue Avenue, Highton that includes more trees and greenery, new seating, a play area, and space for street-trading and public events.

The Draft Highton Village Urban Design Framework (UDF) also considers:

  • how parking and traffic will be managed

  • the proposed streetscape upgrades for Barrabool Road and the laneways

  • the design guidelines for new buildings, to protect village’s low-scale character, and

  • long-term plans to manage heavy vehicle loading in the area.

This project has been developed with community input – through a design workshop held in November 2016, attended by 130 residents and traders. The Draft Highton Village UDF does not pre-empt a future council decision on future community infrastructure for Highton.

We encourage further public consultation from Highton residents and visitors. Anyone interested can talk to a City officer in person by visiting the Belle Vue Avenue pedestrian crossing (in the heart of Highton Village) on:

  • Thursday 14 September 2017 from 1:30 to 4:30pm

  • Friday 15 September 2017 from 10:00am to 12:00pm

  • Saturday 16 September 2017 from 10:00am to 12:00pm

Public comments on the Draft Highton Village UDF close on 26 September 2017. Following consultation, our new council will consider the final plans. To find out more or make a submission, view our Draft Highton Village Urban Design Framework have your say page.
