Dogs on beaches

Tuesday, 20 September 2016

For many, summer in Geelong means long days enjoying the sun, sand and surf with family and friends.

Crowded beaches and dogs aren’t a great idea - for obvious safety reasons. Which is why all dog owners need to be aware of the summer time restrictions.

In peak holiday season from 18 December until 31 January, dogs are not permitted on most of the main beaches of Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads.

Barwon Coast manage this zone which also includes the west bank of the Barwon River through to The Bluff and around to 30W - the beginning of 13th Beach Road.

Dogs are permitted on 13th Beach (except between 40W and 42W) but please follow the local signs which are in place to protect the critically endangered Hooded Plover bird species.

Bellarine Bayside also apply restrictions to sections of Portarlington Beach, Indented Head Beach and St Leonards Beach during the summer season.

Top dog tips:

• Take the time to read the signs as restrictions differ from beach to beach;
• Keep your dog under control, always
• Keep your dog on a lead on all access paths to beaches, and
• Please clean up after your dog.

Thanks for doing the right thing!
