Geelong's Heritage Collections Strategy

The City of Greater Geelong is the owner of a heritage collection of major national, state and local significance. To maintain and care for the collection into the future, the strategic report Our Heritage, Our Collection was adopted in April 2020.

The City's heritage collection is incredibly diverse and reflects Geelong's history as a vibrant and progressive city. It is made up of more than 12,000 heritage objects, artefacts and artworks valued at nearly $28 million. Our Heritage, Our Collection is the first time that the entire collection has been presented in a unified and holistic way.

Our Heritage, Our Collection strategic report provides an overall understanding of the depth and scope of the entirety of the City of Greater Geelong's heritage collections and proposes an overall framework for managing the entire collection.

The strategy is built upon four collection priorities that will guide us to 2023 and beyond:

  1. Significance and Care
  2. Access and Showcase
  3. Creativity and the World
  4. Diversity and Reflection

The collection continues to grow and anyone interested in learning more or viewing the collection should contact the City's collections team.

In addition to the report, council formally adopted a ‘no questions asked’ no-fault policy for the return of any objects that may have once belonged to the council collections. Please contact the City's collections team if you have further information.
