The Greenway project

Geelong's Greenway is a revegetation project along the Ted Wilson Trail which runs alongside the Geelong Ring Road.

Starting in 2014, Council committed to planting 60,000 trees and 20,000 shrubs and grasses by 2018.

Once completed, the Greenway will be an iconic green boundary for Geelong providing beautiful, natural shade for pedestrians and cyclists. It will provide habitat for wildlife and contribute to existing revegetation works along Geelong’s waterways where the path intersects.

The 60,000 trees have now been planted and 2 hectares have been direct seeded with native grasses. Species from the locally threatened Grassy Eucalypt Woodland of the Victorian Volcanic Plains ecological community have been chosen to enhance our local biodiversity and waterways.

Council has collaborated with local businesses, institutions and community groups to undertake the re vegetation works along the Greenway.

The project has had some significant achievements:

Key supporters for the project have been:

  • The Belmont, Grovedale and Highton Scouts
  • The Lions Geelong Breakfast Club who have generously hosted our sausage sizzles each Community Planting Day
  • Greening Geelong West
  • Geelong Toyota who have donated t-shirts for our Community Planting Days and are a joint host of National Tree planting Day with PlanetArk
  • Other groups who have helped with planting: TAC, Foundation 61, Corrections Victoria, Hope Community Garden Group

The 2017 planting season saw the Greenway reach its target of planting 60,000 trees, which is one year early. Council will then continue to plant grasses and shrubs along the Greenway as well as maintain and water existing trees.
