The City of Greater Geelong is excited to announce the initiation of a
comprehensive new Major Events Attraction Strategy, underscoring its commitment
to positioning Geelong as a premier destination for major events, festivals,
and cultural gatherings.
Geelong, a vibrant regional city with a rich history, natural beauty,
and a diverse community, is poised to capitalise on its strengths to draw
visitors from across the region, interstate, and internationally. The purpose
of this strategy is to strategically diversify the major events portfolio,
identifying new opportunities and procuring exciting events for the region.
Developed in collaboration with the Geelong Major Events Committee (GME)
and other key stakeholders, the strategy aims to stimulate and encourage events
that provide measurable economic benefits, promote Geelong beyond the
municipality, and enhance local community life through resident participation.
The current GME objectives include striving to offer events with
significant economic benefits, supporting the development of hallmark events,
and establishing strong links with the private sector, government, and
communities to maximise Geelong's events potential.
Geelong has earned global recognition for hosting international standard
major events. In the fiscal year 2022-2023, the city successfully delivered 18
major events, contributing an economic benefit of $77.5 million to the region.
While the existing Geelong Major Events Strategy (2016-2026) has played
a pivotal role, the evolving landscape calls for a timely review and the
development of a new strategy to address current challenges and opportunities.
The Have Your Say for this exciting pilot project is now open and will
close on Thursday 1 February 2024.

prosperity and community engagement.
This new Major Events Attraction Strategy will build upon our past
successes and chart a course for Geelong's continued prominence on the global
events stage.

We would like to hear your thoughts on the new Major Events Attraction
Strategy for Geelong.
What do you see to be Geelong's strengths? How can we diversify the
major events that take place in Geelong? What new and exciting major events
could be held in the region? What are the potential challenges that may impact
on successful attraction of major events to the region?
