Geelong’s IRONMAN 70.3 event has been chosen by thousands of athletes from across the globe as the best event of its kind in the world.

The City’s annual long course triathlon on the waterfront has claimed the top honour ahead of more than 100 other IRONMAN 70.3 events.

The IRONMAN 2018 Athlete Choice Awards were decided on feedback from more than 55,000 athlete surveys, conducted after series events.

Geelong took out the award for Overall Satisfaction, with the swim leg in Corio Bay ranked third out of the 105 events.

"Who knew Geelong was so beautiful? Everything about this event was fun, supportive and just brilliant," one athlete said.

Geelong has built a strong reputation for offering a stunning venue and world-class course since the first IRONMAN 70.3 was held in the city in 2007.

The IRONMAN 70.3 is supported by funding from Major Events Geelong.

City figures estimated the 2018 event delivered an economic benefit to the region of $2.62 million.

Councillor Bruce Harwood - Mayor

We’re incredibly proud that Geelong has been recognised by the competing athletes as the world’s best Ironman 70.3 event.

This reflects the outstanding work by our events team, and the way we design our sporting events to make the most of our beautiful natural scenery, creating the best possible environment for competitors and spectators.

The City of Greater Geelong aims to be a destination for world class events, and the Ironman 70.3 holds a valued place on our calendar.
