Geelong Jazz Soirees Summer Series will return to the Geelong Botanic Gardens on two Saturday afternoons 22 February and 1 March 2025 from the new time of 4pm.
Soul Sister Swing are playing their final show at the Botanic
Gardens on 22nd February. They’ve decided that after nearly 40 years, there had to be a finish and
what better way than a performance at the beautiful gardens.
Gail, Lynda and Carol will be accompanied by the wonderful Andy
Pobjoy on keys with guest singers who were part of Soul Sister Swing over the
years.
Soul Sister Swing began back in 1985 where they quickly became
well known in the music scene for their unique harmonies and toe-tapping
repertoire of upbeat songs from the 40s big band swing era along with the
popular girl group songs from the 60s and Motown soul. Soul Sister Swing were
regular guests on the Bert Newton show as well performing both locally and
Australia wide presenting corporate floor shows and events.
Affectionately dubbed as the Soul Sisters, “Soul Sister Swing” evolved
from a mutual love of harmonies, Gail, Carol and Lynda would often cross paths
playing locally in various bands and whenever they did, Lynda would somehow
just happen to have her guitar handy and it was a given that it wouldn’t be
long before the sound of three-part harmony would be in the air.
Although initially the timing of when the girls were all free to get
together never seemed to be quite right, eventually it happened and the
conversation soon turned to what their repertoire should sound like and who
they wanted to be as a group.
While one of Gail’s major influences was the Beatles, Lynda’s was more
Motown/Gospel “Gladys Knight and the Pips” with a little Bette Midler on the
side, and Carol tended to lean towards the sounds of British bands such as
Gerry and the Pacemakers.
So the big band 40s Swing era came to mind as it definitely fitted the
bill with its tight, clever, upbeat harmonies, girl groups of the time such as
the Andrew Sisters, the Boswell Sisters, as well as more modern arrangements of
the swing era performed by Bette Middler and the Pointer-Sisters, Boogie Woogie
Bugle boy and Lullaby of Broadway came to name a few.
With Gail (vocal/congas), Lynda, (vocal/guitar) and Carol
(vocal/bass), they continue to delight their audiences with a real sense of
excitement and fun with every performance.
