House of Dreams is a multi-media, cross-disciplinary community arts
project. As we get set to reopen the doors of The Palais Theatre later
this year, this project will celebrate the cultural legacy of the building,
the shared memories that it holds for elderly members of the Geelong
community and the next generation of local artists who will now
benefit from the space.
Phase one of this project will expand and deepen the city’s cultural identity and
what it means to be local by documenting and celebrating memories of our local
cultural past that have shaped and defined the community of Geelong today.
Phase two of the project directly involves the commissioning of a diverse group
of emerging artists to respond to this local cultural identity and interpret the
cultural memories that have shaped contemporary Geelong, presenting a vision
of the creative future of the community.
After advertising on social media and the local paper, we were delightfully flooded with
submissions of Palais memories by dozens of members of the community of Geelong.
Amongst the vast selection of letters, emails meetings and phone calls had, we
selected a small handful that best represented the demographic of people that came
through the Palais doors in its prime years of the 50's and 60's. This event allows us to
share the stories of first loves meeting, singers and musicians performing and what it
was like to work, dance or play at the Palais in it's booming years.
