2018 Archibald Prize

Australia’s most popular art prize, and one of its most prestigious, The Archibald Prize will be returning to Geelong in 2018! The Geelong Gallery will host the exhibition 22 Sept to 18 Nov 2018.

First awarded in 1921, the Art Gallery of New South Wales’ Archibald Prize is  awarded to the best portrait painting, it’s a who’s who of Australian artists, with subjects often including politicians, celebrities, sporting heroes, authors and artists.

Since its inception, the Archibald Prize has been engaging art enthusiasts, often stirring up controversy and always challenging the way we see ourselves and our society. Over the years, the prize has been awarded to many of Australia’s most prominent artists.

The Geelong Gallery is delighted to be the exclusive Victorian venue for the 2018 Archibald Prize.

Five-time Archibald Prize finalist Yvette Coppersmith has won the 2018 Archibald Prize and $100,000 for her work Self-portrait after George Lambert.

Sydney artist and first-time finalist Jamie Preisz won the 2018 Packing Room Prize with a portrait of singer/songwriter Jimmy Barnes AO.

Yukultji Napangati is the winner of the 2018 Wynne Prize and Kaylene Whiskey is the winner of the 2018 Sir John Sulman Prize.

The exhibition returns after Geelong successfully hosted The Archibald Prize in 2017 and saw over 58,270 people visit the exhibition. Of these, 87% of non-local visitors specifically visited Geelong for the Archibald Prize.

The result, as estimated by the gallery, a $6,148,000 economic impact with 33% of visitors recorded as first time visitors to the Geelong Gallery demonstrating a ‘want’ for more cultural events.

This event is proudly supported by the City of Greater Geelong via Geelong Major Events Funding.

The 2018 Archibald Prize is an Art Gallery of New South Wales touring exhibition and is supported by Presenting partner ANZ.
