Apply for Australian Citizenship

Applying for Australian Citizenship is to made through the Department of Home Affairs.

To become a citizen, you will need to complete the following steps:

  1. Make application by contacting the Department of Home Affairs online or call 131 880.   

  2. Pay the application fee - reduced fees are available to eligible applicants.

  3. Attend a short interview and participate in the Citizenship Test, if applicable.

  4. Find out when your citizenship ceremony will be.

  5. Attend the ceremony, make the pledge and receive your Citizenship Certificate.




Most people who apply for citizenship will need to pass a Citizenship Test to demonstrate that they have:

  • a basic knowledge of the English language

  • an adequate knowledge of Australia and of the responsibilities and privileges of citizenship and

  • an understanding of the nature of their application.
