Data on building activity within our municipality is broken down into three categories: total domestic building activity; new dwelling approvals; and total non-domestic building activity.
Domestic building activity
Number and value of all domestic permits
A total of 1,088 domestic permits were issued in the City of Greater Geelong in the June 2024 quarter, a decrease of 11.0 percent compared to the previous quarter, and an annual decrease of 0.4 percent.
The value of domestic permits issued in the June 2024 quarter was $363.0 million, an increase of 1.5 percent compared to the previous quarter, and an annual increase of 27.0 percent.
A total of 4,961 domestic permits were issued in the City of Greater Geelong in 2023-24 a decrease of 4.4 percent compared to the number of permits issued in 2022-23. The value of these permits was $1.47 billion, an increase of 5.7 percent compared to the previous year.

Number and value of new dwelling approvals
A total of 667 new dwelling approvals were issued in the City of Greater Geelong in the June 2024 quarter, a decrease of 13.3 percent compared to the previous quarter, yet an annual increase of 17.6 percent.
The value of new dwelling approvals issued in the June 2024 quarter was $282.5 million, a decrease of 7.2 percent compared to the previous quarter, yet an annual increase of 20.2 percent.
A total of 2,999 new dwellings were approved in the City of Greater Geelong in 2023-24, an annual increase of 4.1 percent. The value of these new dwellings was $1.22 billion, an increase of 6.1 percent compared to the previous year.

Non-domestic building activity
Number and value of non-domestic building permits
A total of 120 non-domestic building permits were issued in the City of Greater Geelong for the June 2024 quarter, an increase of 25.0 percent compared to the previous quarter yet a decrease of 7.0 percent compared to the same period last year.
The value of non-domestic building permits was $165.8 million in the June 2024 quarter, a 15.8 percent increase compared to the previous quarter yet an annual decrease of 15.6 percent.
Permits of note for the June 2024 quarter
included: a multi storey residential building in Central Geelong, a warehouse development in North Geelong, St Josephs College - Arts and Learning Precinct, a warehouse development in North Shore and the Endoscopy and Day Procedure Relocation Project at Barwon Women’s & Children's Hospital.
A total of 486 non-domestic building permits were issued in the City of Greater Geelong in 2023-24, a decrease 28.6 percent compared to 2022-23, yet an increase of 19.5 percent in the value of those permits to $1.17 billion. Large permits contributing to the increase in value included Nyaal Banyul Geelong Convention and Event Centre ($449.1million) and a residential development in Geelong ($58.8 million).
