When a building permit is required

Building Permits are required for almost all new buildings, alterations, demolition and change of use.

A building permit must be granted prior to the commencement of any building work unless the work is exempt under Part 23 and Schedule 3 of the Building Regulations 2018.

To confirm if the building work you propose to carry out require a building permit, you should provide a detailed floor plan, site plan, and copy of title to our Building Services Department located at 100 Brougham Street, Geelong during business hours for assessment and advice.

The Victorian Building Authority provides a PDF document called 'When is a building permit required?' which provides guidance on when building work required or is exempt from a building permit.

When a building permit is required, it must be obtained prior to commencing any building work.
