Creative Spotlight | Artists Profiles | Dr Shelley Hannigan

Our region is home to creatives across a broad range of disciplines, many with national and international reputations.

Each month we'll feature a story of our artists and creatives and to celebrate International Women's Day 2025, we asked Dr Shelley Hannigan about her practice and connection to Geelong.

What is the best advice you have received in your creative career?

To practice regularly.

What other local artists inspire you? Why?

As I work with many artists and also teach art in the region, I don't want to single out a particular artist in the region who inspires me. Many do, and I think it is their dedication to their practice despite many financial and other demands on their life.

How does your connection to Geelong or place inspire your work?

Geelong became my adopted home when I moved here from New Zealand/Aotearoa, 26 years ago. It has been a great place to live and work as an artist, with many companies to access materials, supportive opportunities through the City of Greater Geelong and community events, as well as opportunities and support from Deakin University where I work as an art academic.
