Birds Eye View for Schools

Bird’s Eye View - A History of Geelong

The seagulls of Geelong have seen it all; from the arrival of the first squatters in 1836 to the opening of the new children’s paddling pool at Eastern Beach, Bird’s Eye View is a unique opportunity to experience the city from a gull’s perspective.

Look from above with six Geelong panoramas spanning 150 years and retrace the appearance and disappearance of some of the city’s most significant features while you marvel at Geelong’s transformation into a modern city.

Year levels: 1 to 10

VELS focus: Local History, Drama, Communication, Geography, Economics, Inquiry and Creative Thinking

Education Activities:

Become part of the action as you delve into the trunk of an unknown past child!

Aided by an interactive series of images and a time-travelling tour of Geelong’s past, students will use their new knowledge to bring their child to life. In small groups, they’ll dig through the suitcase contents of these travelling figures to become a part of a unique day in the life of a period resident (and be introduced to a variety of primary and secondary sources).

Students will then creatively interpret their day for the class.

For senior students, themes of land use and industry can be explored.

Download the Teacher’s Guide (vels 1-4 or vels 4-6) to plan your visit.
