The City of Greater Geelong gave $5000 to local aspiring athletes to help further their national and international sporting careers in the 2008/09 financial year.
The money was allocated through Barwon Sports Academy’s Bis-Sport program, which aims to promote and financially assist athletes from the Geelong region.
Last year the Barwon Sports Academy also sought contributions from local businesses, receiving a total $850 from a number of organisations in Geelong.
Mayor Cr John Mitchell said the City was proud to be working alongside the Barwon Sports Academy to help promising athletes achieve their goals.
“Barwon Sports Academy is doing great work helping young people further their sporting achievements through their support services and development programs,” he said.
“We have some brilliant athletes here in Geelong, and the Bis-Sport program is about launching them into the next stage of their sporting career.”
“This past financial year Bis-Sport has provided funding for 30 local athletes.”
“The recipients have been able to take part in significant sporting events, including the Beijing Olympics, international tournaments in Japan and the USA, as well as a number of national championships throughout Australia,” Cr Mitchell said.
Since it’s inception in 1986, Bis-Sport has provided approximately $350,000 for over 400 local athletes.
This year assistance was been provided for athletes from 17 different sports, including: Baseball, Grid Iron, Netball, Karate, Modern Pentathlon, Triathlon, Ironman, Basketball, Softball, Polocross, Tennis, Brazilian JiuJitsu, Athletics, Calisthenics, Soccer, Gymnastics, Wheelchair racing.
