Skilled Stadium will host its 600th AFL game on Saturday when the league’s two oldest clubs, Geelong and Melbourne, go head to head.
The game will coincide with Geelong Football Club’s 150th birthday celebrations.
“It’s very fitting that both the Cats and Skilled Stadium reach these milestones at the same time,” City of Greater Geelong Mayor Cr John Mitchell said.
The Mayor paid tribute to the important role Geelong played in establishing the AFL.
“The Cats form a big part of Geelong’s identity. They’re one of the oldest clubs and the only regional club in Victoria,” he said.
“Heading to Kardinia Park to watch the game has been a great family tradition for generations.”
Cr Mitchell said Skilled Stadium was the premier regional venue for AFL matches.
“The real beauty of Skilled Stadium is that it’s one of the few ovals where AFL and VFL games plus local footy finals are played.”
