Members of the public are welcome to address questions to Council. The Council’s meeting procedures Local Law provides for public question time at Council Meetings and these notes are provided as a general guide.
Question time is specifically available for questions rather than forums for discussion. Groups who wish to raise issues should make prior contact Ward or Portfolio Councillors or direct their request to the Mayor.
Public question time gives any member of the public the opportunity to freely ask a question on any Council related matter, (e.g. road maintenance, town planning, Council policies, etc). It is preferable that written notice of questions be provided to the Governance Co ordinator in advance of the meeting (electronically on attached document, by facsimile on 5227 0276 or hand delivered) to the Governance Co ordinator, City of Greater Geelong, City Hall, 30 Gheringhap Street Geelong. Questions lodged in advance will be dealt with in order of receipt and can be researched prior to the meeting enabling a more detailed response.
Answers to questions shall be given immediately, if possible, or taken ‘on notice’ if an on the spot answer is not available. (Where a question is taken ‘on notice’ an answer shall be mailed within 14 days and the response will be included on Council’s website. www.geelongaustralia.com.au).
Asking the question is easy and members of the public are encouraged to ask any questions they have. To be fair to others, a limit of 3 minutes per person applies. Question Time is limited to 20 minutes under the Local Law however at the discretion of the meeting, this can be extended.
