Walking School Bus

Walking, cycling or even 'scooting' to school is a great way to start the day.

It's an easy way to improve health, increase your friendship networks, help the environment and save money by leaving the car at home.

A number schools in Geelong have established a Walking School Bus program to encourage families to walk, cycle or 'scoot' to school instead of driving.

Walking School Bus Definition

A 'walking school bus' is a group of children walking (and sometimes cycling or 'scooting')to school with one or more adults supervising and acting in a bus driver like role.

It can be as informal as two families taking turns walking their children to school or as structured as a route with meeting points, a timetable and a regularly rotated schedule of trained parents and volunteers.

Benefits

Choosing 'active travel' methods has many benefits allowing social interaction between children, families, friends and neighbours.

It helps improve traffic and parking problems around busy schools too.

Assistance encouraging 'Active Travel' at your school

The 'Walking School Bus' programs takes time to establish, so there are now many other programs that can work well quite quickly.

Our Road Safety Officer is available to assist parents and schools to explore ideas and programs to encourage walking, cycling and 'scooting' to school.

Alternative Programs

Other programs include 'Walk on Wednesday' or 'Park Part Way'.

There are many options available that are easy to implement at your school.
