Councillor Allowances

Councillors are paid an annual allowance to recognise the demands placed on Councillors in carrying out their civic and statutory functions.

These allowances are set by the State Government in two parts:

Part A

Councils are categorised within three levels based on a Council’s population and total revenue. Geelong is among the biggest Councils and consequently is in the highest level.

From 1 December 2011 allowances were adjusted by 2.5% bringing the Mayoral Allowance to $83,650 and Councillors to $26,188.

Part B

An additional 9% of the allowance set out in Part A is added to reflect the equivalent of the superannuation guarantee contribution.

For the City of Greater Geelong the Mayoral Allowance is $91,178 and Councillors $28,545. Allowances are paid quarterly in advance.

For many years Council has had a Policy on Councillors’ Expenses and Facilities and this was updated and adopted by Council on 15 December 2009.
