Bushfire safety in our municipality is a partnership between emergency services, state and local government, the community and individuals.
We need strong partnerships to better protect Victorians in future bushfire seasons.

What is the City doing?
We are working closely with the CFA and DSE to prepare for the upcoming fire season.
Our Municipal Fire Prevention Officer works closely with the Country Fire Authority (CFA) at all times. The role covers:
- Fire prevention inspections
- Fire hazards
- Fires
- Smoke
- Excessive vegetation on a property
- Water standpipes
- Permits to burn
What can you do?
Stay up to date
In response to the Black Saturday fires and the Royal Commission there is new information and initiatives becoming available (such as the new fire danger rating system).
Residents should regularly check the media and CFA and DSE websites for the latest up to date information on how to prepare for the bushfire season.
Make your property fire ready for summer
The City of Greater Geelong encourages residents to Prepare. Act. Survive. Be Fire Ready for this bushfire season.
To prepare for the bushfire season and know how to respond in the event of an emergency, residents should refer to the CFA’s guidelines for summer fire safety.
There are NEW rules about clearing vegetation around your home and on your property.
- Take a balanced approach to clearing vegetation – Excessive clearing is not always beneficial. You should know the rules and know what the real risks are before you clear. The CFA’s ‘Living in the Bush Workbook’ should be used as a guide before undertaking fire prevention works on your property.
- Know the NEW rules – Download the new ’10/30 right’ for clearing vegetation around your home and on your property on the DSE website below.
- Talk to your neighbour – There are guidelines about shared boundaries.

On public land
There are new rules about clearing vegetation if your property adjoins public land such as a roadside reserve.
- Contact the land manager first - You should contact the appropriate land manager first before doing any work on public land including collecting firewood or clearing vegetation. Land managers may include agencies like Vic Roads, DSE, or Council depending on the location.
