Geelong Marine Industry Project
The Geelong Marine Industry Project is informed by the adopted Osborne House Marine Precinct Masterplan and aims to develop an industrial marine precinct to support the recreational marine industry in North Geelong adjacent to Osborne House.
The precinct is well located, being at the southern edge of the Geelong Port in North Geelong. It has direct access to Corio Bay and the Princes Highway.
A key objective of the project is to provide for a transition of land uses and complement the existing heavy industry to the north of Mackey Street and the residential area to the south of Swinburne Street.
Included in the precinct would be manufacturing, maintenance, repair, dry stack and slip/lift facilities, accompanied by marine based retail, clubhouse and improved facilities for boating.
The Masterplan includes reclamation of approximately 6 hectares to provide for a large hardstand area close to water level to allow the launching and retrieval of boats.
The Masterplan also includes provision for the sustainable use and restoration of the Council owned Heritage listed building known as Osborne House.
A Conservation Management Plan (CMP) has been prepared for Osborne House and the Stables.
This document builds on the 1999 conservation plan and considers the Osborne House Precinct Masterplan and Feasibility Report. The CMP provides the historical context, physical analysis, assessment of significance and guidance in relation to conservation policy and management plan.
The project provides an opportunity for Geelong to deliver required services to the boating community of Port Phillip whilst stimulating job growth in marine manufacturing and tourism industries in the region.
Benefits
- Stimulate job growth in the construction sector as well as creating permanent employment opportunities in the manufacturing, boating and tourism industries.
- Cater for the growing need for boating and marine industry facilities.
- Improved environmental outcomes.
- Provide a long term sustainable use for Osborne House Status
Status
We have been working in partnership with key state government agencies to identify processes for realising the Geelong Marine Industry Project. A Conservation Management Plan has been developed for Osborne House, along with a business case for the project which investigates and reports on a range of issues including social, financial, economic and environmental analysis.
Having completed the business case, the City has resolved not to proceed with an expression of interest process at this time, however the long term vision is for the revitalisation of Corio Bay and waterfront area adjacent to Osborne House.
We continue to investigate potential long term sustainable uses for Osborne House that are consistent with this vision.
