Bellarine Horse Trail Study

The Bellarine Horse Trail Study was designed to assess the demand for a network of horse trails on the Bellarine and, if demonstrated, guide the development and extent of horse trails.

In order to establish a network of horse trails, a combination of public roads and public land is needed, including permission from public land managers.

A number of public land managers have expressed their concern regarding the use of public roads, beaches and the Bellarine Rail Trail as horse routes.

In light of this, the study recommends actions Council can take in the short and longer term.

Short term recommendations in the plan include:

  • Designating a number of roads as horse friendly. Signage would be installed on these roads.
  • Developing a Code of Conduct for horse riders using the roads.

Longer term recommendations in the plan include:

  • Continuing negotiations with land managers to improve access to potential off road horse trails.
  • Assisting the horse riding community to develop horse riding infrastructure at horse and pony clubs.

The study involved extensively consultation with the community, including vets, horse riders, riding schools, pony clubs and residents to ensure it reflects the needs of the whole community.
