Loading Zones
Loading Zones are parking spaces for use primarily by vehicles, which are engaged in picking up or setting down goods on behalf of a company or business.
Loading zones are not provided for use by drivers of private vehicles who are undertaking a business activity or shopping.
Loading Zones are identified by red signs at each end, with arrows pointing towards the zone.
Eligible Vehicles
You can only stop in a Loading Zone if you are driving either:
- a truck or a G-classified goods van, or
- a public bus or taxi, or
- a courier or delivery vehicle permanantely marked in the way specified by the Victorian Road Rule Regulations
and you are actually loading or delivering goods or picking up or setting down people.
Ineligible Vehicles
This means that the following vehicles cannot use a loading zone:
- a sedan
- a station wagon
- a motorbike with 3 wheels
Exceptions
If these vehicles are used for commercial delivery or courier services, they may use loading zones if:
- they have a business name, company name or courier sign which is to be placed on both sides of the motor vehicle body
- if using a motorcycle, the sign must be placed on both sides or the rear; and
- the sign has letters at least 50mm high which can be read from a distance of 5 metres
Permanent adhesive signs are permitted. Magnetic signs or signs placed on windows or roof racks are not acceptable.
Time Limits
You should always check the time limits displayed on signage. If there is no time limit on the sign, you can stop for a maximum of 30 minutes.
