Public art event part of the line up at Friday’s Geelong Night Market

What do origami fortune tellers, helium balloons and a cargo parachute have in common? This unlikely combination forms part of a public art event being held during Friday’s Geelong Night Market in Johnstone Park.

“It will all be revealed on the night but I’m sure people will find it good fun and very worthwhile,” said Cr Barbara Abley who holds the Council’s Arts and Culture portfolio.

“Visitors to the night market will have an opportunity to take part in a fun public art event at the same time as they provide valuable survey data to the City of Greater Geelong.”

Cr Abley said the City was currently working on a strategy to guide the development and care of the municipality’s public art collection.

“It might surprise people to know that within the City of Greater Geelong our public art collection is valued at more than $8 million and includes almost 170 items in addition to the Baywalk Bollards,” said Cr Abley.

“We’re very keen to gather people’s thoughts on public art in general so Friday’s night market is a great opportunity for interested people to put forward their ideas.”

The term ‘public art’ relates to art specifically made for a public audience and located in public places such as parks, building forecourts and laneways. Public art can include monuments and memorials; private developer projects; art programs associated with public events; and artist initiated projects.

The first of six Geelong Night Markets will be held between 5.30pm and 10.00pm Friday 20 January at Johnstone Park. The public art survey will take place over three consecutive Geelong Night Markets.

The City of Greater Geelong’s public art event and survey will have its own clearly marked marquee within the market precinct.
