City of Greater Geelong Mayor Cr John Mitchell said the announcement today of joint federal and state government funding to support Ford’s Australian operations was welcome news for the Geelong community.
“We are very pleased with today’s announcement which gives certainty to local Ford workers and will ensure the continued production of the iconic Falcon and Territory models,” said Mayor Mitchell.
“Ford has a long and proud history in Geelong and has withstood many economic pressures by adapting to changing markets and in particular by investing in new technologies and production methods.
“I’m especially pleased to note the federal and state government funding will further assist Ford with its program of increasing fuel efficiency and reducing emissions – thereby helping ensure Ford’s locally built vehicles remain relevant and competitive in the market place.
“Geelong and Ford are intrinsically linked and whilst the Geelong regional economy has diversified considerably in the last 20 years Ford remains a major local employer and a key industry hub that supports many peripheral enterprises,” he said.
“Ford also plays a major role as a corporate citizen in Geelong - for example its contribution to the Geelong Cats is one of the longest running sports sponsorships in the world,” Mayor Mitchell added.
