Former Australian test players Greg Matthews, Rodney Hogg, Jimmy Maher, Phil Emery, Peter Sleep and Wayne Holdsworth conducted a cricket master class for under 15 players as part of the Commonwealth Bank Australian Country Cricket Championships.

The master class was part of a busy day for the championships with four Twenty20 games held in Kardinia Park on the Geelong Cricket Club and St Mary’s ovals.

City of Greater Geelong Mayor Cr John Mitchell said the master class was an example of one of the benefits of hosting major events.

“The Council’s major events strategy has long identified the economic benefit that derives from hosting sports and cultural events but there are significant social benefits as well – not the least being the fact that elite sports can inspire people of all ages to get involved themselves,” said Mayor Mitchell.

“The cricket master class is a great opportunity for aspiring cricketers to learn from some of the acknowledged masters of the game,” he said.

Geelong is the host region for the Commonwealth Bank Australian Country Cricket Championships which are being staged at various local venues until Thursday 12 January.

Country teams from most Australian states and territories are competing in the championships.

The City of Greater Geelong contributed funding support to the Commonwealth Bank Australian Country Cricket Championships through its Geelong Major Events Committee.
