The front of City Hall in Gheringhap Street, Geelong, is undergoing a facelift, with access to the Customer Service area temporarily moved to the building’s Little Malop Street entrance.
The Mayor, Cr John Mitchell, said the Heritage Victoria-approved works had become necessary because of the deterioration of the some of the exterior surfaces at the front of the building.
He said the foundations of the bluestone steps at the City Hall’s front entrance had been showing some movement in recent times and were being re-laid, along with the patterned tiles in the portico of the building.
Cr Mitchell said research carried out by the Historical Records Centre had revealed details of the pattern carried by the original portico tiles laid more than a century ago, and the pattern had been carefully replicated with the approval of Heritage Victoria.
He said the tiled surface of the building’s disabled access ramp was being re-laid with the latest non-slip tiles.
Cr Mitchell said the original slate roof above the City Hall’s main entrance had been leaking and also needed replacement after more than a century of service.
“This roof surface is being replaced with original Welsh slate,” the Mayor said.
Cr Mitchell said with the temporary closure of the Customer Service Centre, the opportunity was being taken to re-paint this area.
He said the cost of the works was approximately $100,000, with the project scheduled to be completed and the main Customer Service Centre reopened by the end of January.
