Recycle your excess Christmas rubbish

Christmas cards, wrapping paper, packaging, empty bottles – rubbish bins have a habit of overflowing at this time of year.

And what on earth do you do with the Christmas tree once the festive season is over?

The City is encouraging residents to recycle what they can and dispose of all rubbish thoughtfully.

Environment and Sustainability portfolio holder Cr John Doull said residents needing to get rid of their real Christmas tree can simply chop it up into pieces (30cm or less) and throw it in their green waste bin.

“Green waste is chipped, composted and reused as a soil supplement.”

“Drop off excess waste such as empty bottles and gift packaging to our resource recovery centres in Drysdale or North Geelong,” said Cr Doull

“Polystyrene can also be taken to the Geelong Resource Recovery Centre, where it is recycled by GDP Industries for use in concrete products.”

“There is no need to have piles of rubbish accumulating in your backyard over Christmas and New Year; our resource recovery centres are open every day except Christmas day.”

“The amount of household rubbish always spikes at this time of year so we ask residents to do their bit and help us to reduce our city’s overall environmental impact,” Cr Doull said.

Resource Recovery Centres are open seven days a week, from 8.00am – 4.15pm.
