Simonds Stadium will host its first ever Super Rugby game when the Melbourne Rebels take on New Zealand’s Waikato Chiefs in a pre season match on 3 February.
Ticket details for the twilight match will be announced in coming weeks.
“This is a huge coup for Geelong and Simonds Stadium. The City has been doing a lot of work behind the scenes to secure this high profile match,” City of Greater Geelong Mayor Cr John Mitchell said.
“Waikato Chiefs recently signed marquee player Sonny Bill Williams so hopefully this will be one of his first games with the chiefs that fans will get to see.”
“I’m thrilled that we can bring rugby union to Geelong and we’d really love to see a huge turnout for the match.”
Cr Mitchell said the City was always looking to expand the use of Simonds Stadium beyond Australian rules football.
“In recent years we’ve seen Simonds Stadium host A-league soccer, a Twenty20 cricket match, even Supercross motorcycle racing – now it’s great to see the game that’s played in heaven come to the hallowed turf of Simonds Stadium.”
“We’ve invested a lot in making Simonds Stadium a state-of-the-art and versatile venue capable of hosting a wide range of events.”
Simonds Stadium will also host a W-League soccer match on Saturday 3 December between Melbourne Victory Women and Newcastle Jets Women.
